Indications

Lamisil Tablets are indicated for the treatment of onychomycosis of the toenail or fingernail due to dermatophytes.

Dosage and Administration

Lamisil is available for oral administration as 250mg tablets.

Normal Dosage:
Lamisil Tablets, one 250 mg tablet, should be taken once daily for 6 weeks by patients with fingernail onychomycosis. Lamisil, one 250 mg tablet, should be taken once daily for 12 weeks by patients with toenail onychomycosis. The optimal clinical effect is seen some months after mycological cure and cessation of treatment. This is related to the period required for outgrowth of healthy nail.

Overdose: Overdose symptoms are not well known but might include drowsiness, poor coordination, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, and headache.

Drug Description

Lamisil Tablets contain the synthetic allylamine antifungal compound terbinafine hydrochloride.
Chemically, terbinafine hydrochloride is (E)-N-(6,6-dimethyl-2-hepten-4-ynyl)-N-methyl -1- naphthalenemethanamine hydrochloride. The empirical formula C21H26CIN with a molecular weight of 327.90, and the following structural formula:

Side effects

The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

  • Disturbances of the gut such as indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or abdominal pain.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Headache.
  • Allergic skin reactions such as rash and itch.
  • Pain in the muscles and joints.
  • Alteration in taste.
  • Fatigue.
  • Pins and needles sensations (paraesthesia).
  • Dizziness.
  • Serious skin reactions (consult your doctor if you experience a worsening skin rash).
  • Liver disorders.
  • Blood disorders.
  • Depression.
  • Anxiety.

Precautions

  • Avoid alcohol or use it in moderation while taking this medication. Alcohol and terbinafine can both affect the liver.
  • Make sure you take this medicine regularly and complete the course as directed by your doctor.

Drug Interactions

  • Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
    • cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB)
    • rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)
    • cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
  • You may not be able to take this medication, or you may require a special dosage or monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
