Indications
Paromomycin sulfate is indicated for intestinal amoebiasis—acute and chronic
Dosage and Administration
Paromomycin is available for oral administration as 250 mg paromomycin capsules.
Normal Dosage:
Intestinal amebiasis: Adults and Children: Usual dose—25 to 35 mg/kg body weight daily, administered in three doses with meals, for five to ten days.
Management of hepatic coma: Adults: Usual dose—4 g daily in divided doses, given at regular intervals for five to six days.
Drug Descriptions
Paromomycin sulfate is a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces riomosus var. paromomycinus. It is a white, amorphous, stable, water-soluble product. Paromomycin sulfate is designated chemically as O-2,6-Diamino-2,6-dideoxy-β-L-idopyranosyl-(1→3)-O-β-D-ribofuranosyl-(1→5)-O-[2-amino-2-deoxy-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-2-deoxystrepta-mine sulfate (salt). The molecular formula is C23H45N5O14 • xH2SO4, with a molecular weight of 615.64 (base). Its structural formula is:
Side Effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
- an allergic reaction
- decreased hearing or ringing in the ears
- dizziness
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or is especially bothersome.
Precautions
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have:
- stomach or intestinal problems such as stomach ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease, or intestinal blockage (obstruction)
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Humatin
- you have a blockage in your intestines
You may not be able to take this medication, or you may require a special dosage or monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment.
Drug Interactions
Some medical conditions may interact with Humatin. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, or dietary supplement
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- if you have hearing problems, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson disease, or kidney problems, or you are dehydrated
