Indications
Azopt (brinzolamide ophthalmic suspension) 1% is indicated in the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.
Dosage and Administration
Azopt (brinzolamide ophthalmic suspension) 1% is supplied in plastic DROP-TAINER® dispensers with a controlled dispensing-tip as 5 mL, 10 mL, 15 mL.
Normal dosage: The recommended dose is 1 drop of Azopt (brinzolamide ophthalmic suspension) 1% in the affected eye(s) three times daily.
Drug Description
Brinzolamide is described chemically as: (R)-(+)-4-Ethylamino-2-(3-methoxypropyl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno [3,2-e]-1,2-thiazine-6-sulfonamide-1,1-dioxide. Its empirical formula is C12H21N3O5S3, and its structural formula is:
Brinzolamide has a molecular weight of 383.5 and a melting point of about 131°C. It is a white powder, which is insoluble in water, very soluble in methanol and soluble in ethanol.
Side Effects
Some of the noted side effects are blepharitis, dermatitis, dry eye, foreign body sensation, headache, hyperemia, ocular discharge, ocular discomfort, ocular keratitis, ocular pain, ocular pruritus, allergic reactions, alopecia, chest pain, conjunctivitis, eye fatigue.
Precautions
- Do not touch the dropper to any surface, including the eyes or hands. The dropper is sterile. If it becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in the eye.
- Apply light pressure to the inside corner of the eye (near the nose) after each drop to prevent the fluid from draining down the tear duct.
- Do not use this medication without first talking to your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction
Drug Interactions
Using brinzolamide eye drops with oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (eg acetazolamide) may increase the likelihood of side effects
